Marilyn Monroe at 100: Celebrating a Palm Springs Icon

Few stars are as connected to Palm Springs as Marilyn Monroe. Her desert story began in 1949 when she was famously discovered poolside at the Racquet Club. Through the 1950s and early ’60s she returned often, becoming one of the city’s most recognizable faces. Before her death in 1962, she even owned a home in the stylish Vista Las Palmas neighborhood.
Marilyn wasn’t just an icon of glamour, she was a bold advocate for authenticity, compassion, and standing with marginalized communities. Today her legacy shines on in artwork throughout Palm Springs, including the super-sized Forever Marilyn statue in Downtown Park.
On Saturday May 30, in honor of what would have been Marilyn’s 100th birthday, Greater Palm Springs Pride is throwing a party so big it’s destined for the record books. The goal is to gather the largest group of costumed Marilyn look-alikes for a synchronized martini toast in front of the famous statue—and set a joyful new world record in the process.
Big Party, Great Cause
You’re going to want to be a part of this once-in-a-lifetime street party. In addition to the record-setting toast, the Marilyn 100 Centennial Celebration will include musical guests, live performances, and lots of festive food and drink vendors. With over 500 campy bombshells projected to take over the city, there’s no doubt the patios and dance floors in the Arenas District will be buzzing with special DJs, themed cocktails, and infectious energy all weekend.
Nothing to wear? No worries! When you purchase a registration ticket through the official event page you’ll receive a complete Marilyn “Icon Kit”, complete with a signature white halter dress, a platinum blonde wig, and a martini glass. Just add lipstick, a beauty mark, and vodka!
All ticket proceeds directly benefit Greater Palm Springs Pride, the amazing non-profit group that organizes our annual November Pride events, plus provides programming and advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community every month of the year.
Make It an Iconic Weekend
After the party winds down, what could be more glamorous than heading back to Twin Palms for a swim under the stars? We can’t wait to honor Marilyn and share in this history-making celebration with you.
