One of the unexpected pleasures of staying at Twin Palms Resort is how close you are to some of Palm Springs’ most unforgettable hiking experiences. Rugged mountain ridges, sweeping desert views, ancient canyons, and even a seasonal waterfall are all within easy reach. Two of the best hikes in the area—South Lykken Trail and Tahquitz Canyon—are just minutes from the resort. Whether you’re drawn to a classic desert climb or a culturally rich canyon walk, each offers its own kind of adventure.

South Lykken Trail: A Scenic Ridge Walk Above Palm Springs

A longtime favorite of outdoor lovers, the South Lykken Trail delivers dramatic, wide-open views of Palm Springs, the Coachella Valley, and the towering San Jacinto range. Starting at the South Lykken Trailhead at the end of Mesquite Avenue, the trail ascends steadily through rocky switchbacks, gaining roughly 1,000 feet of elevation and revealing expansive vistas almost immediately. Along the ridgeline, expect quintessential desert scenery: barrel cacti, towering ocotillo, granite boulders, and—during cooler months—pops of wildflowers. It’s not uncommon to spot roadrunners, quail, lizards, and occasionally endangered bighorn sheep on the distant slopes.

Most hikers spend 2 to 2.5 hours on this out-and-back route, turning around at the ridge or continuing farther along the trail depending on time and energy. If you prefer not to retrace your steps, it’s also possible to start at the southern trailhead in the Indian Canyons neighborhood and follow the ridge northbound, finishing at Mesquite (you’ll have to use Lyft or Uber to get back to your car).

This is a moderate to strenuous trail with no shade, so bring sun protection, water, and a snack—there are picnic tables at the top to enjoy the view. Morning light is ideal for photos and cooler temperatures, while late-afternoon winter hikes offer spectacular sunset hues.

From Twin Palms, it’s about a 5-minute drive or a 30-minute walk to the starting point at the end of Mesquite Avenue. Parking is not available at the trailhead, but you should find a spot on the street before the restricted area begins.

Tahquitz Canyon: Waterfall Trails & Ancient Oasis Beauty

Operated by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, Tahquitz Canyon is one of Palm Springs’ most culturally and environmentally significant landscapes. In contrast to the open desert ridges of Lykken, this canyon feels intimate and dramatic—defined by high stone walls, a flowing seasonal stream, and the famed 60-foot Tahquitz Falls (typically running late winter through spring).

The 2-mile loop trail includes about 350 feet of elevation gain and takes 60–90 minutes to complete. It’s rated moderately challenging due to uneven surfaces, stone steps, and rocky passages shaped by centuries of water flow. Interpretive signs along the trail share the canyon’s deep cultural importance, native plant uses, and archaeological history.

We recommend hiking mid-morning for cooler temperatures and a more tranquil canyon experience. Shade is limited, but many hikers enjoy cooling their feet in the stream along the way.

The entrance to Tahquitz Canyon is also located at the end of Mesquite Avenue, just north of the South Lykken Trailhead. From Twin Palms, it’s approximately a 5-minute drive (with on-site parking available) or around a 30-minute walk for those wanting a warm-up. As of this writing, adult entry is $15 (subject to change). The site is open 7:30am-5pm daily Oct-June, Friday-Sunday only July-Sept.

A Final Favorite: Ladder Canyon

If you’re planning more desert exploration, consider a day trip to the famed Ladder Canyon hike in the Mecca Hills. Known for its slot canyons, ladder climbs, and colorful rock formations, it’s a guest favorite for those seeking a more adventurous desert experience.
